Boer War Roll of Honour

The Devon Heritage website has this record of a soldier of the Boer War:

Private James Lucraft of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Lucraft. Born in Bridgewater, Somerset in the March Quarter of 1866. Enlisted in 1886. In Ladysmith during the siege. Wrote a letter published when he was 34.

James can be seen on the Michael Lucraft tree on the website, where it records the family group memory that he died of flu in 1919.

If you go to this website you can read his letter.

  • I was looking up Lieut Luckraft because of our church, and found your website. I think you know there are connections with Lewes, Sussex; our church, St John's sub Castro, Lewes, has a brass lectern given in memory of Lieut L, killed in Santo, New Hebrides. I was interested because I worked in the New Hebrides in the 1970's. The church history pamphlet says the lectern was given by the Misses Bacon, in memory of their mother, but the wording on the lectern refers to Lieut L, son of Capt A M Luckraft and his wife Louise.
I haven't looked any further in our records, but do let me know if you would like more info -it's more interesting than doing the PCC minutes, which I should be doing! Best wishes, Jenny Lovell, e-mail jennyclovell@hotmail.com
